Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis 576
Although the 4-8-4 type derived its popular name "Northern" from the Northern Pacific Railway which first used them,  many southern railroads shied away from this name and came up with names of their own.   On the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis,  4-8-4's were known as "Dixies".   Sole surviving NC&StL Dixie no. 576 is on display in Centennial Park in Nashville.   Over the years this engine has been eyed by several railroads and organizations for restoration to steam,  but so far the City of Nashville has been unwilling to let her go.   Photo by Allen Dale.
