Photo of the Month:
Your photos are always welcome here on the Surviving Steam Photo Archive, and every month I'll add a new featured photo in this space. This month's photo is Northern Pacific 4-6-2 no. 2156, undergoing restoration at the Minnesota Transportation Museum's Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Welcome to the "Surviving Steam Photo Archive", formerly "Surviving Steam Locomotives of New England". I'd like to thank everyone who has sent in photos over the past few months. It has been a long time since the last update, but it's on the way, so stay tuned!

The purpose of this site is to show current photographs of surviving steam locomotives around the country. While any steam locomotive can be included here, as the URL suggests the emphasis is on "park engines", those engines displayed outdoors in city parks, in widely varying states of repair. I'd also like to focus on engines that exist outside of preservation, in storage or in some cases even in scrapyards!

Wherever possible, I will try to include operating locomotives and indoor museum displays. However, some museums have policies against photographing their exhibits (especially if it's for publication), and the fact that they are indoors makes many engines difficult or even impossible to photograph. Operational locomotives also pose their own set of challenges, since they are usually locked away in a shed when they are not running. Most museums and tourist lines already have their own web sites, so many of these engines are sufficiently covered elsewhere anyway.

In addition to the states covered on this site, the home page now includes links to similar sites covering other states. The use of frames is designed to make navigation back to this page easier. Click on any of the state buttons in the menu on the left (even those for states on other sites), and the "Surviving Steam Photo Archive" title frame will remain on your screen. Clicking the title graphic will bring you back here. However, if you click on the names of the other sites in the menu, or any links to other sites on the various state pages, the frames will go away, leaving you to surf away unhindered by this site's frames.

The "Surviving Steam Photo Archive" is still very much a work in progress, and is by no means a complete listing. For a complete list of surviving steam locomotives in these and other states, check out Wes Barris' excellent Steam Locomotive dot Com website. If you have any comments or criticisms about the "Surviving Steam Photo Archive", or if you have any photos of your own that you would like to contribute,  please contact me at the e-mail address below.
